This one is dedicated to Mac users everywhere who fondly remember and continue to use Mac OS 9 as their primary or secondary operating system — I’m quite happy to be counted amongst that special group :^)

Here’s the short list of my personal Apple hardware and corresponding OS installs. Everything does boot up and operate, though it must be noted that the last four items are packed away in boxes awaiting an honoured place in a happy little Mac shrine.

  • Quicksilver 2002 Power Mac G4 – Mac OS X 10.4.8 and Mac OS 9.2.2
  • iBook G4 – Mac OS X 10.4.8
  • iMac G3 – Mac OS 9.2.2
  • Power Mac 7300/200 – Mac OS 9.2.2
  • PowerBook 1400 – Mac OS 8.0
  • Quadra 950 – System 7.5.3

Wow, you’re Mac hardware ownership history eerily mirrors my own (with the exception of the Quicksilver – my last Mac was the iBook G4, long gone prior to my recent MacBook purchase). I thought I was the only person outside of the professional world that had actually owned a Quadra 950, lol. Wasn’t that key start thing a kick?

Well I gotta be honest with on the Quadra. It was actually my 2nd Mac. Acquired it for a monster payment of $15 in a silent bid of old equipment at a prepress house I was employed with at the time. Darn thing is almost as loud as a jet. On the plus side it came with Photoshop 4, Illustrator 6 and a few other professional apps that the company didn’t wipe off the machine. Plus it had a full complement of installed RAM.
