Tumbling over moss draped stones the waters of Maramec Spring dance and play in the noonday sun as they wander along their predetermined course.

Missouri Dogwood

Seems as if Spring 2009 may have overslept a wee bit; too many cold blustery days, opening day baseball with snow flurries, too many trees still caught in a leafless Wintery slumber.  All is not lost.  Spring will awaken and give chase to Summer, and before we’re ready the year will go ’round once again and we’ll be right back here looking forward to another season of warm days and sunshine.

Little Green Bee

Here’s a busy little fellow all done up in metallic green and packing a good load of pollen on his saddlebags. The proper genus for these little bees is Agapostemon, they are commonly known as sweat bees here in the States. This fine specimen was collected on August 17th, 2008, 9:45 a.m. at Shaw Nature Reserve.

My oh my, the last leg of summer is on the wane — the days roll by too quickly my friends. Here’s something from the front garden to honour her passing. Now off to school with ye sluggards! Ar.

Cold River III

One thing I’ve always strived for in my artistic endeavors is to avoid posting slightly different takes of existing compositions; less repitition, more variety is the motto of the day. This image is one of the rare instances where that unwritten rule gets tossed aside.

While essentially being the same subject matter as Cold River, this alternate take was photographed just a little earlier in the day; enabling an overall darker, more contrasted starting point — a trait which gives this variant a richer and more vibrant feel. The dual sun flare nearly sets fire to an otherwise frozen twig and the rushing stream has four distinct areas of interest.

Edge sharpening was enhanced by using the ‘High Pass’ filter in Photoshop CS on a duplicated layer that was then blended over the original image using the ‘Linear Light’ option. Shadows and colors were deepened prior to sharpening.

After the Rain

This happy little drop of H20 darn near held up a sign saying “Look at me!” — just sitting there and twinkling in the sun, suspended along the frond a Tiger Lily in the side garden.
