Shadow Play

I went into this scene wanting to do something to show my admiration for the writing of H.P. Lovecraft and even had the title Nyarlathotep in my head as I went along. But as it goes with most of my art I wound up somewhere else instead. The picture is named for the many shadows being cast by the glass spheres. The reflective background is a giant squished donut turned up on it’s side, the glass rod and it’s shadow have a little fun as they pass through the donut hole.

Accidental Zen

If you look closely at the intersecting spheres, ying-yang images are reflected on each surface — an unexpected occurence, hence the name, “Accidental Zen”.

Daydream no.5

Daydream no.5 is one of those fun to look at images that has become part of my signature style. Soft colours and perspective give the illusion life, shiny surfaces and an upside-down refraction in glass add to the effect. The pattern on the ground plane was modified from the original surface in the Bryce Materials Lab. The reflected stack of squished spheres on the right side is accomplished with a flattened sphere that has been turned on it’s side and leaned back at a slight angle. Post processed in Photoshop with Image > Adjust > Auto Levels.

Austra Alien

This one is dedicated to my email friend Dee, who was first to give me a big warm “Hello!” after downloading Alien Disco. Of course the title is a clue to where she and her family make their home. Dee says the colors remind her of some dusk shots of Uluru, that mystical red monolith “found almost smack bang in the heart of Australia’s red centre.” Thanks Dee!

This is why  no longer lets interns handle super-heated glass logos in the lab — some poor schlub drops it and yet another big pile o’ Rainbow Coloured Goo™ has to be cleaned up :^)

Alien Dreamtime

I was having a bit of trouble naming this one and asked Bradford Wiles of MacMonkies for help. Brad suggested “Alien Dream” which turned my thoughts to a book series by Tad Williams called “Otherworld”. In the books, an Australian bad-boy by the name of Johnny Wulgaru would enter a mind-state he called dreamtime as he prepared for murder and other grisly crimes. The books are a great read with an ending that comes from totally unexpected angle.

Drifting

This scene was put together after seeing Tom Hanks in “Castaway” — my own little homage to “Wilson” drifting away across the South Pacific…
